This year as in the past 2 years we are joining likeminded groups in 115 countries around the world in a 350 event, marking the number of parts per million of CO2 that is safe for the planet. http://www.moving-planet.org/

Last year we made paper windmills. The year before we made candle lanterns. This year the theme is “Moving Planet.” We will be partnering with Bike North on their calendar ride around Homebush Bay. During the ride we will make a giant number 350 out of bicycles (and people if necessary) laid on the ground. The ride is a 25km easy ride suitable for people 12 years and over with their own bike. Ride starts at Meadowbank Wharf at 8.30am and finishes approximately 12.30. For more information go to:

Its finally happened. After five years it appears that Australia is close to a big step forward on climate change.

The Australian Conservation Foundation says that if this agreement is passed in August or September it will be the most significant legislative victory for the environment in Australia’s history, laying the foundations for a clean energy future.

But we can’t celebrate yet.

The next week is critical as the vested interests that oppose action will be going to work to undermine the agreement. They’ll continue to say this package will send households broke. They’ll say we shouldn’t act before the rest of the world, even though, without this package, Australia lags way behind the curve. They’ll say it will cost jobs, even though study after study has shown action on climate change will create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and the deal has the support of unions and workers.

IN FACT.. AMONGST OTHER MEASURES THE CARBON PRICE AGREEMENT WILL….

Lift Australia’s 2050 emissions target to 80%

Lay the foundation for science-based climate action in the coming years and supports the effort to reach an ambitious global climate agreement

Invest $10 billion in renewable energy, establish the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, supports energy efficiency and start planning for a 100% renewable energy future

Help the most vulnerable Australians

Begin to close coal-fired power stations and prevent the building of new commercial coal-fired power stations

Begin to shift transport onto a cleaner base

Invest $1.7 billion in protecting bio-diversity and supporting farmers.

We have heard that the work our climate group – along with 60 other climate groups – did in surveying households about renewable energy (14,000 households surveyed in all) played a critical role in the negotiations.

Your voice is needed now more than ever to get us over the line.

Please spend five minutes doing one of the following:

Send an email to or call your local Federal MP

Call talk back radio/TV eg. Sunrise

Write to a newspaper…

to tell them you welcome the action on climate.

We would like to congratulate our new Australian of the Year 2011 Mr Simon McKeon, philanthropist & businessman who has taken a strong position on the need for urgent action on climate change.

Printing paper

The Wilderness Society has launched a new campaign to change people’s purchasing behaviour. Instead of buying Reflex brand paper printing paper, which is made from pulp from trees logged in native forests, the organisation is encouraging people to buy recycled paper which is labelled “100% recycled post-consumer waste”. It is hoped that by people taking this action, the company will be forced to change it source of pulp to 100% plantation or recycled fibre. To find out more, please visit:

Global Issues:

There is now a proven link between climate change and human impact. Scientists from universities in Canada and Scotland have made the link between increased heavy rainfall and greenhouse gas emissions. The study was published recently in the journal Nature. A report from the ABC can be seen at:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/17/3141472.htm

Australian Issues:

Floods

The recent floods and cyclone in Queensland has highlighted the need for State and Federal governments to be more assertive in tackling climate change and adjusting their current funding policies to bring about real action.

One of the biggest contributors to climate change is the burning of fossil fuels. However, instead of cutting emissions, Anna Bligh is rushing to repair coal industry infrastructure so that Xstata and BHP can continue business as usual.

Julia Gillard could easily use the $9 billion of annual government subsidies to the fossil fuel industry to cover the costs of flood relief. Instead, she has announced cuts to programmes that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as the ‘Solar Flagships’ that supports investment into large-scale solar power generators and the green car initiatives.

If you would like to support this call to action, you can sign an on-line petition at:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/tax-polluters-for-climate-disasters/

Climate Commission

Tim Flannery, the 2007 Australian of the Year, will be heading the Climate Commission which the Federal Government has established. The commission will be looking at the effects of climate change on the Australian community. Greg Combet, the Federal Minister for Climate Change made the announcement recently.

The Commission will look at the recent natural disasters and the role of climate change as well as increasing information to the public about climate change.

More on Tim Flannery

Tim Flannery and Paul Collins, a Catholic theologian, recently featured on Radio National on 30 January 2011 talking about the ethical and religious aspects of a changing climate. Read the transcript at:

“You ain’t seen nothing yet”

Professor Ross Garnaut is warning that unless Australia takes immediate and decisive action on climate change, we can expect more extreme weather events such as experienced in Queensland into the future.

He further said that a World Bank study concluded that Australia was a world champion by a large amount in the amount of carbon emissions per head. Read more:

Sustainable fish

The good fish Fish has much lower emissions than beef or lamb (if it’s locally caught) but we need to protect our fish stocks and the ocean they are in. The Australian Marine Conservation Society has launched Australia’s first online sustainability guide for seafood. www.sustainableseafood.org.au

Global Issues: CARBON CAPTURE & STORAGE

Reports are saying that a CCS project for enhanced oil recovery project in Canada is seeing leakage of CO2 through the cap rock to the surface. This may well be the first incident of a CCS leak caused from an actual project. In 2009 Greenpeace raised concerns about how CO2 behaves once stored. This could be a huge blow for the proponents of CCS, raising issues once again of safety, reliability and liability.

There was a story on the ABC’s AM program on 21 January which said that 2010 was one of 3 hottest years on record & the wettest year on record. Particular mention was made of the recent Pakistan floods. For more details check the ABC website : abc.net.au

Australian Issues: No New Coal

The coal industry is the largest contributor to greenhouse gases in Australia. ANZ Bank is the biggest investor in this industry for both coal mining & energy production. There is a current national campaign to highlight these issues & we have recently picketed outside the Gladesville & Top Ryde branches of the ANZ Bank.

Here’s the link to the YouTube video which shows the power of local community advocates (once you know that this guy basically single-handedly shifted US$110m out of Bank of America and into local banks & credit unions).

Floods:

Recent scientific advice to the Queensland Government warned that the state would be threatened by higher flood levels from intense torrential downpours brought on by climate change. In 2010 the Scientific Advisory Group to the Queensland Government’s Inland Flooding Study advised that “an increase in rainfall intensity is likely” and “the available scientific literature indicates this increased rainfall intensity to be in the range of 3–10 per cent per degree of global warming”.

There is also an article in Crikey which relates to the Queensland floods.

Local Issues

A local chemical engineer Yash Divekar was selected from hundreds of applicants to attend Al Gore’s annual Climate Project in Jakarta 8-10 January. It is encouraging to see a young local resident participating in such a positive way & helping to spread the word. To see the full article in the NDT 5 January, 2011.

Curious about what pollution your bank funds?

ANZ bank are the largest funder of coal mining and coal fired power in Australia. Despite the fact that coal is the single biggest global contributor to greenhouse gases, Australia has 12 new coal fired power stations planned. ANZ and the three other big banks have been asked by Greenpeace to rule out financing these plants, but have refused. Westpac, NAB and Commonwealth are also big funders of coal. Ryde Gladesville Climate Change Action Group have been outside ANZ branches in Gladesville and Ryde letting customers know about the bank’s track record and letting them know how they can express an opinion on this to the bank. More information on how to let your bank know what you think http://www.greenpeace.org.au/climate/TakeAction.html. If you would like to join us next time we visit the banks, call Jo on 0414 375 149
