January/February 2014 newsletter

THAT hottest year

2013 broke all the Oscars for hottests. And that radical bunch the Australian Bureau of Meteorology confirm “This event could not have happened without increasing greenhouse gases, without climate change” http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/current/annual/aus/

Good news! Australia’s first solar thermal plant just got a step closer with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, Alinta and the South Australian Government conducting a feasibility study for siting a plant in Port Augusta. This follows concerted lobbying of Alinta’s CEO by 100% Renewable and people like you who signed their petition.

AND the Tasmanian Government has committed the state to 100 per cent renewables by 2020 and a 35 per cent reduction in emissions

Submissions needed on the Fed’s emissions reductions plan The Federal government has released a Green Paper, setting out their “direct action” plan to reduce emissions without the carbon tax. … make a simple submission – one sentence is enough. Direct action has been agreed by economists as being the most expensive and least effective way to reduce emissions. Instead transition immediately to an emissions trading scheme. Submissions due 5pm 21 February. Don’t let the Abbott government get away with thinking they have a mandate to do this.

Cash in your BHP shares The CEO of BHP Billiton has made it clear that BHP will not be investing in wind and solar http://thegenerator.com.au/bhp-says-divest-from-us/>

Australia ‘s race to the bottom of the world’s list of greenhouse gas emitters. Yes we are now 57th out of 61 countries. With carbon tax waiting only for the Senate change over in July to be repealed Australia has no clear policy against climate change.

The firefighters agree “Climate change is real. When you go out there and you stand, fighting a bushfire — you just realise something is wrong. Something has changed.”/ – check this clip of Danny Ward, Firefighter www.getup.org.au/campaigns/climate-action-now/firefighters/our-firefighters-are-in-are-you#.Uoch5gWX8mQ.facebook
