Ryde Gladesville Climate Action – July Newsletter

Happy NAIDOC week!

It’s National NAIDOC Week, and the theme is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud. ❤️ honouring the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – As we acknowledge the care traditional custodians took of Country for thousands of years, check out this nice little vid from Surfers for Climate

Get dirty

We have a unique opportunity with Jerome Laxale’s election to Bennelong (you’re welcome) and growing need to get our voices heard about the pressing need for climate action.  If you are interested in getting more involved locally, we’d love to chat. Message us on FB as a DM, email info@climatechangerg.org.au or call Jo on 0414 375 149.

Better transport for lower emissions

Car transport is one of Australia’s biggest sources of climate pollution. The Climate Council’s  new report   shows only half of Australians living in the biggest capital cities have access to good public transport.  Email our state transport Minister

https://www.climatecouncil.org.au/help-us-ask-for-cleaner-cheaper-transport/

to ask for investment in infrastructure and services to build shared and active transport options

Electrify!

The NSW Greens have launched a campaign to pressure the NSW Government to Get Off the Gas!  A key action they are suggesting is to Send an email to Treasurer Daniel Mookhey and Environment Minister Penny Sharpe asking them to prioritise getting households and businesses off gas and reject  Santos’ coal seam gas project in the Pilliga Forest.

So-called gas shortage

Is there really a gas shortage? .A recent Australia Institute Report found that:

•   LNG producers themselves are the state’s biggest users of gas, using 2.5 times more than WA’s electricity generation to process gas for export.

•   90% of gas in WA is exported

•   No royalties are paid on two thirds of the gas exported from WA.

SeedMob – the youth Indigenous climate group is engaging with Kimberley communities, to help give voice to their concerns and efforts to protect country, culture and climate. For more

 Bee’s need hotels

Bee’s play a vital role in pollinating native vegetation and food crops. Loss of habitat is increasing vulnerability to infections. Provide a bee hotel in your garden to provide protection to these essential friends.

Council elections

Saturday September 24th and there are some excellent candidates running you might like to support. In the past Ryde Council has had a number of Green Councillors who have made a significant difference. We also have Councillors from the ALP’s Labour Environment Action Network, worth supporting. For more on the election and to find out which ward you live in

For more on Greens candidates     For more on ALP candidates

Given the Liberal party’s anti – climate policies and brake on progress towards climate action nationally and also within Ryde Council we cannot support Liberal candidates.

Handing out how to votes on election day for a few hours is an important boost to those whose values you endorse. Booth by booth election results consistently bear this out.
